The Nissan Maxima has always been a little more than just a midsize four-door sedan, and with a mild refresh for the new model year the 2019 Nissan Maxima continues to be a standout model in the Nissan cars family. Compared to the likes of the Altima, the Maxima is a sportier, lower slung model with a touch of flair. If you fancy being a little different and buying something other than an SUV or truck, here's what the latest version of the Nissan Maxima has to offer.

Styling

On the whole, and even though they're not as popular as they were a few years ago, midsize sedans are usually pretty attractive cars and competition in the segment remains fierce. Many of the Nissan's rivals have slightly sloping rear rooflines for a sporty slant, but the Maxima takes that style a little further than most. This year Nissan has refreshed the Maxima by smoothing out some of the rougher corners of the exterior styling, but the nose is now more dramatic with the V-shaped grille increasingly prominent. New lights have been introduced this year too, and the overall look is now even more dramatic than last year.

Engines and performance

The Maxima is a sportier car than its direct rivals and there's an emphasis on the driving experience we don't often see away from genuine performance models. The big giveaway about the focus of the Maxima is what lurks under the hood. Although it's the same engine as last year, what we have under the hood is a V-6 and not a small-displacement turbo-four. The Maxima's V-6 is a 3.5-liter unit producing a very healthy 300 horsepower and 261 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent to the front wheels through a CVT transmission. A CVT might not sound like something particularly sporty, but this is a specially tuned CVT with simulated shifts that really is very good indeed.

Interior

Even though the exterior of the Maxima is close to full-size, the interior is definitely midsize. That's not a criticism as it adds to the sport sedan feel of the Maxima, but if interior space is particularly important to you the Altima has more passenger and cargo space inside. The front seats are excellent and unlike a lot of mainstream sedans, even base model seats are power adjustable. And whether the model you go for has cloth, synthetic suede, or more often than not real leather upholstery, the quality and comfort is admirable.

Trim levels

If you like plenty of models to choose from you'll love the 2019 Nissan Maxima range. The entry model is the Maxima S, and from there the lineup goes to the SV, SL, SR, Platinum, and the top of the range Platinum Reserve. And if that's not enough, there's also a Premium Package for the SR trim which adds the likes of a dual panel panoramic moonroof, auto-dimming driver-side outside mirror, outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down feature, Intelligent Around View Monitor, memory driver's seat and rear automatic braking.
